Analysis of the reasons of decline in the migration of water birds, specifically mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and grey herons (Ardea cinerea), in Quetta, Pakistan *1Laraib Ehtasham, 2Sadia Hassan Sherani, 3Umama Izbal and 4Nawal Shakeel Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University, Quetta, Pakistan. *Correspondent; E-mail Address ✉: laraib.ehtasham@gmail.com Accepted August 04, 2025 Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and grey herons (Ardea cinerea) are among those water birds that migrate to Pakistan during winter. This research was conducted in 2017, and it highlights the causes of the decline in the number of mallards and grey herons in Quetta. Hanna Lake was selected as the study area, and the relevant data was collected through questionnaires, site visits and interview and literature. As a result, this study identified drought, hunting, lack of food (death of fishes) and water pollution as the reasons of the decrease in the number of migratory birds in Quetta. Plus, drought was the most prominent causative factor that resulted in the decline of migration of mallards and grey herons. Key words: Decline; grey herons; mallards; migratory birds; Quetta.
